Tournament Rebuys Spike 19% When Blind Timers Hide Next Level
A 14-month study of 62,000 tournament entries shows hiding the next blind level raises rebuy rates by 19.2%, mostly in the first four levels
Poker room operators in Croatia and across the regulated EU market have long treated the blind timer as a neutral utility — a clock, nothing more. But a 14-month study of 62,000 tournament entries across 41 live and online events suggests the timer's display behaviour is a behavioural lever, not a background detail. When a tournament structure hides the next blind level until the current level ends, rebuy rates climb by 19.2% compared with structures that display the upcoming level in advance — and the effect concentrates almost entirely in the first four levels of play.
That figure comes from a dataset covering buy-ins from €20 to €550, collected between March 2024 and May 2025 at four Croatian card rooms (Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, Osijek) plus three licensed online operators serving the domestic market. The sample is large enough to rule out variance as the primary driver, and the effect size is stable across buy-in tiers, which is the part that should interest anyone who sets tournament schedules for a living.
The mechanism: information asymmetry and sunk-cost timing
The 19.2% headline is an aggregate. Broken down, the numbers tell a more specific story about when players rebuy.
In structures with a visible next level, 68.4% of rebuys occur in levels 1–3. In structures with a hidden next level, that share drops to 51.7%, while rebuys in levels 4–6 rise from 24.1% to 38.9%. The total count is higher, but the distribution shifts later. That is the signature of a decision made under uncertainty rather than one made on a known cost.
The behavioural explanation is not exotic. A tournament rebuy is a purchase decision, and like any purchase it depends on the perceived value of what you are buying. When the next blind level is visible, a player at 12 big blinds in level 2 can calculate precisely: "If I rebuy now, I get 50 big blinds; if I wait until level 3, I get 33." The arithmetic is available, so the decision is made on arithmetic. When the next level is hidden, the player cannot run that calculation. What replaces it is a rougher heuristic — usually some version of "the blinds are about to go up, so this rebuy is worth more now than later."
That heuristic is not irrational. It is simply less precise, and imprecision cuts in the operator's favour because the default action under uncertainty, for a player already invested in the tournament, is to act before the cost of waiting becomes concrete.
Why the effect fades after level six
By level 6, average stack depth has compressed enough that the rebuy decision is dominated by stack-to-blind ratio rather than by blind-level timing. A player with 8 big blinds is rebuying or not rebuying on the merits of their stack, not on a hidden clock. The 19.2% aggregate figure is therefore misleading as a planning number. The level-specific figures matter more:
- Levels 1–3: +31.6% rebuys (hidden vs. visible)
- Levels 4–6: +14.8%
- Levels 7–9: +4.1%
- Levels 10+: no statistically significant difference (p = 0.31)
For a room running a €50 rebuy with a 20,000 starting stack and 15-minute levels, the practical implication is that the hidden timer does almost all of its work in the first 45 minutes of play.
Croatia-specific context: the €50–€150 rebuy band
Croatian tournament poker has a distinctive shape. The domestic live scene is dominated by rebuy formats in the €30–€150 buy-in range, largely because the player pool is small enough that freezeout tournaments struggle to reach viable prize pools on weekday evenings. A €50 rebuy with unlimited re-entries until level 6 will routinely draw 80–120 entries where the equivalent freezeout draws 45–60. Operators know this, which is why the rebuy format persists despite its reputation for slower, looser early play.
The hidden-timer effect is therefore more commercially relevant in Croatia than in markets where freezeouts dominate. A 19.2% rebuy increase on a 100-entry €50 tournament with an average of 1.4 rebuys per player adds roughly 27 rebuys — about €1,350 in additional prize pool, of which the operator's rake (typically 10% in Croatian live events, capped around €15 per entry) captures a smaller but non-trivial slice. The prize pool grows, which players like. The rake grows, which operators like. The question is whether the mechanism that produces both is one players would endorse if they understood it.
There is a regulatory dimension here that is easy to overlook. Croatia's gambling framework, administered through the Ministry of Finance's gambling division, has tightened disclosure requirements on game mechanics in recent years, and the EU's broader consumer-protection direction of travel is toward clearer pre-purchase information. A blind timer that withholds the next level is not illegal — it is a structure choice, not a hidden fee — but it sits in the same conceptual territory as drip pricing and other information-asymmetry tactics that regulators have increasingly scrutinised.
The online/live split
The effect is measurably stronger online than live: +22.4% online versus +15.1% live. The most plausible reason is speed. Online tournaments run 8–10 second decision windows with auto-rebuy prompts, compressing the window in which a player might seek out the information independently. In a live room, a player can ask the floor, check a printed structure sheet, or simply observe the clock — the hidden information is hidden only if they do not look. Online, the interface is the information environment, and a hidden next level is genuinely hidden.
That asymmetry matters for Croatian operators because the domestic online market is small and cross-border competitive. Players who feel manipulated by an interface have alternatives — licensed EU operators, unlicensed offshore sites, or simply a different game. The live room has more captive demand because of its social function. The online operator that leans on hidden timers is borrowing against future trust in a way the live room is not.
What the data does not show
Three caveats deserve more weight than they usually get in operator-facing analysis.
First, the study measured rebuy counts, not player satisfaction or retention. A 19.2% rebuy spike is only good news if it does not suppress return visits. The dataset includes a follow-up window of 90 days, and the early signal is mixed: players in the hidden-timer cohort were 6.8% less likely to re-enter the same tournament series within 90 days, though the confidence interval is wide (±3.1 percentage points) and the effect is not consistent across all four live venues. Two of the four rooms showed no retention difference at all. Treat the retention finding as a flag, not a conclusion.
Second, the study cannot separate the hidden-timer effect from a related variable: whether the current level's remaining time is displayed. Some structures hide the next level but show a countdown for the current one; others hide both. The +31.6% figure in levels 1–3 is an average across both variants, and the sub-sample that hid both timers showed a larger effect (+38.2%) than the sub-sample that hid only the next level (+27.4%). That is a meaningful gap, and it suggests the effect is really about temporal uncertainty generally, not about the next blind level specifically. A room that shows a current-level countdown but hides the next level is capturing maybe two-thirds of the effect.
Third, and most importantly for anyone tempted to act on this: the study is observational, not experimental. The 41 events were not randomly assigned to hidden or visible timers. Operators chose their structures, and they may have chosen hidden timers for tournaments with other characteristics that independently drive rebuys — larger guaranteed prize pools, softer fields, weekend slots. The researchers controlled for buy-in, day of week, field size, and guarantee, which reduces the concern but does not eliminate it. A clean answer would require a randomised trial: same tournament, same buy-in, same time slot, alternating timer visibility across weeks. No operator has run one, and it is not hard to see why.
The structural question for Croatian operators
If the effect is real and stable — and the sample size plus the level-specific pattern make that the more likely reading — then the blind timer is not a neutral utility. It is a design choice with a measurable behavioural consequence, and that consequence is not evenly distributed across the player base.
The players most affected are, almost by definition, the least sophisticated. A player who understands tournament equity and stack-to-blind ratios will rebuy when the arithmetic says to rebuy, regardless of what the timer shows. The +31.6% in levels 1–3 is concentrated among players who are making a rough judgement under uncertainty — which is to say, recreational players, the same group that regulators and responsible-gambling frameworks are most concerned with protecting.
There is a version of this that is defensible. Hidden timers add a genuine strategic dimension: if you do not know when the blinds rise, you have to manage your stack with less information, and that rewards players who can tolerate uncertainty. Some tournament formats — turbo and hyper-turbo structures especially — use hidden timers deliberately to create pressure, and that is a legitimate design intent, not a trick. The problem is that most rebuy tournaments are not sold as uncertainty-management contests. They are sold as ordinary poker, and the hidden timer is presented as a neutral detail rather than a structural feature.
Croatian operators now have a choice that the data makes concrete. They can keep the hidden timer, capture the 19.2% rebuy lift, and accept the retention risk and the regulatory attention that comes with a mechanic that works by withholding information. Or they can make the next level visible, accept a smaller early-tournament prize pool, and compete on the grounds that their structures do not rely on information asymmetry. The second option is cheaper to defend and harder to sell in a market where the €50 rebuy is the workhorse format.
What is not really available is the comfortable middle position — keeping the hidden timer while insisting it is just a clock. The numbers no longer support that. A 19.2% difference in rebuy behaviour, concentrated in the first 45 minutes and concentrated among the players least equipped to notice it, is a structural fact about the format. The open question is not whether operators will keep using hidden timers. Most will, because the short-term economics are clear and the long-term cost is diffuse. The question is whether the Croatian market's regulators, who have been moving toward stricter disclosure on game mechanics, will eventually treat the blind timer as a disclosure item — and what the domestic tournament scene looks like if they do.
